STANDARD 3: PLAN FOR AND IMPLEMENT EFFECTIVE TEACHING AND LEARNING
3.4 Select and use resources
3.4 Select and use resources
Demonstrate knowledge of a range of resources, including ICT, that engage students in their learning
Evidence
Annotation
My evidence for this focus area is two resources I used during my maths lessons.
1) ‘Bats on Parade’ by Kathi Appelt (Picture story book)
2) NUMBEROCK ‘Equal Groups Multiplication Song’ (YouTube video)
Reflective statement
Due to the remote nature of this placement, I used a variety of ICT resources to support my teaching. ICT is recognised as a general capability in the Australian Curriculum, meaning that students should be supported and given the opportunity to use ICT confidently across the curriculum.
I introduced the second maths lesson by playing the NUMBEROCK ‘Equal Groups Multiplication Song’ youtube video. Pound and Lee (2011) suggest that songs and rhymes involving maths can provide children with relevant mathematical language and be used to support memory of math concepts. This song I selected made the connection between arrays, repeated addition and multiplication, which was the focus of the lesson.
I introduced the third maths lesson with a read aloud of the picture story book ‘Bats on Parade’ . This book represents multiplication through the arrangement of marching band bats in arrays. Attard (2017) suggests that picture books provide a meaningful and fun context for mathematics learning and can be effective at improving student engagement, whilst integrating literacy skills. I selected this book in particular because it didn’t have too many words to distract from the mathematics concept being taught and it included the specific notation students would be practising during the lesson (e.g. the equation 3 x 3 = 9 accompanied an illustration of bats in a 3 by 3 array).
In my future teaching I will continue to use a variety of resources to engage students and provide them with the opportunity to apply their understanding in different ways.
